Nitrotin's purpose is to provide packaging solutions focused on product quality, consumer safety and environmental sustainability.
NITROTIN HAS LOCATIONS ACROSS CANADA WITH OFFICES AND PRODUCTION LINES IN KELOWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA AS WELL AS TRURO AND DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA.
We have spent years in Western Canada working within the cannabis industry and learning the tricks of the trade. As legalization approached, it soon became clear our industry would need improved solutions for cannabis packaging. Poor quality packaging negatively impacts cannabis and we have already seen product recalls in Canada.
Our team has set out to make a difference by taking applied science from the food industry and implementing it to the cannabis industry. After designing equipment, sourcing materials, making upgrades to meet CSA approval and building our team, we are ready to launch Nitrotin within Canada!
Nitrotin does not operate in the United States.
CANNABIS CHEMISTRY
The cannabis flower has a wide range of active ingredients that are subject to degradation during and after packing. In order to deliver a high quality, consistent product to consumers, steps can to be taken to improve stability and shelf life for cannabis flowers, concentrates, and other products while reducing the environmental impact.
Cannabinoids are mostly stable in a normal atmosphere. However, many of the critical flavour and fragrance components are highly susceptible to oxidation reactions. For example, Myrcene is a highly desirable monoterpene found in cannabis products. It autoxidizes (becomes a different molecule) but also polymerizes due to its functional groups (isoprene). This process of oxidation works as an accelerator for toxic growths like mold, yeast, and harmful bacteria that could prove dangerous if smoked.
NITROGEN
Nitrogen is an inexpensive material for inert atmosphere processing and packaging, particularly if other operations at a given the facility utilize liquid nitrogen (LN2). Nitrogen packaging not only reduces oxidation of chemical components, it will also inhibit the growth of mold, yeast, and aerobic bacteria. This will improve the consumer experience even after these products spend months in the distribution system.
ATMOSPHERE
Managing the atmosphere levels for Cannabis is a crucial part of producing a quality and safe product. This is especially true during the stages of cannabis processing and packaging. The inert atmosphere can be dry or humidified to achieve optimum storage condition for a range of products.
All extraction, processing, and packaging operations benefit from low temperatures. Processing and packaging are best performed in climates with low humidity and temperatures between 4°C and 20°C. Human comfort and practicality determine requirements for climate at each step in the processing and packaging chain.
Our Nitrotin team has extensive experience and expertise in Cannabis packaging and will provide direction on optimal atmosphere levels based on bud composition.
TECHNOLOGIES
The technologies Nitrotin has used through applied science include container coating and specialized equipment designed for atmosphere control. Both of these technologies have combine to provide a premium and cost-effective packaging solution.
